How much is $19 trillion? It’s obviously a lot. But is it enough to sink the U.S. economy, or just hold it back a little?Donald Trump thinks the national debt — $19.2 trillion and climbing—is so large it has transformed the United States from a wealthy nation into a “poor” one. In a recent story, I took issue with Trump’s characterization of America as poor, pointing out that we enjoy the highest disposable income, on average, among advanced nations. The U.S. still spends an enormous amount on defense and other things, and is borrowing money, for the moment, at the enviable interest rate of 1.9%.Trump supporters don’t buy any of it. “Newman is a clown,” wrote one reader, striking a tone similar to many others. “If a family is in debt, does it matter if they make money? Poor.”You can hear more people trashing the reporter in the video above. I could argue with the logic, since being in debt isn’t the same as being poor or broke. Trump himself has often taken on debt as part of his business deals, and four of his properties have declared bankruptcy since 1991 because they couldn’t pay back their debt. Come to think of it, Trump may know exactly what he’s talking about.Rick Newman’s latest book is Liberty for All: A Manifesto for Reclaiming Financial and Political Freedom.
